Maryrose Vella obtained her BA degree with Economics and Sociology as major areas of study in 1996 and her Masters' degree in Islands and Small States Studies in 2004, majoring in Economics and Environmental Studies. Her research focused on the 'Impacts of Climate Change on Small Island States'. She served as administrator at the Islands and Small States Institute of the Foundation for International Studies at the University of Malta. Besides the administration of the Institute, she coordinated conferences and publications and was Project Leader for projects assigned to the Institute. She was also in charge of organising training workshops for international organisations such as the Commonwealth Secretariat, UNEP and others.
