12 October 2008 Meeting of the Small States Forum
The 2008 Small States Forum (SSF) was held during the World Bank/International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, DC, on Saturday, October 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The 2008 SSF was chaired by the Hon. Prof. Peter H. Katjavivi, Director General of the National Planning Commission, Namibia, and focused on regional approaches, including the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery, the experience of small middle-income countries in southern Africa, and telecommunications reform in the Pacific. 15 January 2009 SSNED hires new staff
The SSNED hired new staff in 2009 namely Mr David Pulis as full-time administrator and Ms Maryrose Vella as part-time assistant administrator with Professor Briguglio as Director of the network.
30 January 2009 SSNED funds 3 twinning projects and 2 workshops
The network is funding 3 twinning projects and 2 workshops namely:
· Twinning project between Malta and Singapore entitled: “Development of e-Government in St Lucia”
· Twinning project between Seychelles and Mauritius entitled: “e-Learning Development and Training for Educators in the Seychelles”
· Twinning project between St Lucia and Malta entitled: “Assistance in Public Transport Reform: Building of Regulatory Capacities at the Malta Transport Authority”
· Workshop on Sustainable Development held in Malta entitled: “Training Workshop Sustainable Development for small States”
· Workshop on Climate Change held in Fiji entitled: “Training Workshop Climate Change and Adaptation in the Pacific Region, With a Focus on Computer Modelling”.

Projects in the pipeline for the 2009 include the following:
· Twinning project between St Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados entitled: “Counter Automation at the St Vincent and the Grenadines Postal Corporation”
· Twinning project between Belize and COMNET entitled: “National e-Government Strategy for Belize”
· Twinning project between Gambia and Cyprus entitled: “Developing Strategic Directions for the Competition Commission of the Gambia”
· Workshop on Competition Policy held in Barbados entitled: “Competition Law and Policy in the Caribbean Small States: Institutional and Enforcement Challenges”.
30 June 2009 Summaries of completed 2 completed workshops
Summaries of the two training workshops, funded by the SSNED have been posted on the SSNED website. http://www.ssned.org/other-initiatives. The workshops related to (i) the development of a sustainable development strategy for small states, held in Malta and (ii) adaptation approaches to climate change in the Pacific small countries, held in Suva, Fiji. Another project is scheduled to be held in October 2009, in Barbados on Competition law and Policy in Small States.
